Our story

While walking the dog and discussing our relationship one Saturday morning in 2021, a shared vision for the future began to come into focus as we dreamed about creating a space where people could experience the same kind of breakthroughs in healing, growth, and transformation that we have experienced in our own mental health journeys both individually and as a couple. This dream is now a reality and the heartbeat of Trilogy where Amy offers coaching and oversees the business and operational aspects of the practice while Dr. Guthrie oversees the clinical aspects.

We know how hard it can be to find a therapist who feels like a good fit - someone not only who has knowledge, skill, and experience, but also is genuine, self-aware, empathic, and intuitive; treats you with unconditional positive regard; provides a safe environment conducive to self-exploration and insight; has the wisdom to help you tap into your own wisdom; effectively facilitates psychological self-healing; equips you with additional knowledge and skills when needed; and promotes adaptive change. This is the type of therapeutic relationship we strive to foster at Trilogy.

We aim not only to help relieve suffering but also promote the realization of your potential as you make peace with the past, gain new insights, increase self-efficacy, and expand your capacity to love.

About dr. John Guthrie, Ph.D.

“The three acts of our story, it turns out, are a gradual progression toward unity within our self, our relationships, and what we choose to do with our days. A progression toward wholeness, which is to say, peace.” - Kelly Flanagan

People pursue therapy for various reasons, sometimes for new problems that arise, and oftentimes for long-standing ones that have become too unmanageable to ignore. Not only do such problems help us see our need for stronger support and improved coping but also provide the impetus for personal development.

Trauma, problematic sexual behavior, relationship crises, despair, or anxiety may be dominant themes of your past and current story, but these do not have to dictate your future story. As a licensed psychologist (PSY28998) providing telepsychology to adults anywhere in California (and limited availability for in-person psychotherapy in Pasadena, CA), my desire is to help you resolve your distress and become more whole.

As a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT), I specialize in assessing and treating compulsive sexual behavior (sex addiction, pornography addiction, “love” addiction, out of control sexual behavior). See the Sex Addiction Resources page for more information. I also provide couple therapy to recovering sex addicts and their partners in order to work through partner betrayal trauma and facilitate relational recovery.

As a psychologist, I address other mental health concerns as well, primarily ones related to trauma, stress, anxiety, depression, relational problems, chronic pain, life transitions, and other distressing experiences. My approach is integrative, in service to the particular needs of each individual or couple. My work with couples is emotionally focused and utilizes resources from the Gottman Method. As a rehabilitation neuropsychologist and certified brain injury specialist (CBIS), I help individuals recovering from traumatic brain injury.

EMDR therapy is my primary treatment modality for trauma, stress, phobias, and anxiety. It has also been found effective for chronic pain and depression. My treatment of trauma often integrates parts work (concepts and techniques from ego state therapy and Internal Family Systems), DBT skills (mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness), and the “bottom-up” somatic approach of the trauma resiliency model (TRM), especially during the stabilization phase of treatment.

I received training in basic clinical hypnosis through the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH). Clinical hypnosis is a tool I integrate into my work with clients, when appropriate, especially for fostering personal empowerment and internal resource-building.

When it comes to positive outcomes, a strong therapeutic relationship is more important than specific techniques. I take care to nurture a collaborative bond with my clients.

I am a member of the International Institute of Trauma & Addiction Professionals (IITAP), the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA), the San Gabriel Valley Psychological Association (SGVPA), and the American Psychological Association (APA). My certification as a brain injury specialist is through the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA). My diverse educational background includes a Bachelor’s of Music Education from the University of Oklahoma; an M.A. in Intercultural Studies from Fuller Seminary; and an M.A. in Psychology along with a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Fuller Graduate School of Psychology (APA-accredited).

About Amy Guthrie

Amy Guthrie - coach

business operations

I am working on my International Coaching Federation (ICF) coaching credential and offer coaching to clients. I am a Certified Partner Coach Candidate, through The Association of Partners of Sex Addicts Trauma Specialists and, specializing in partner betrayal trauma and problematic sexual behavior.

I am passionate about living a life of freedom as my true self, the self I have worked hard to uncover, heal, and nurture. This work has brought beautiful freedom and joy to my life but it has not been easy. At times it is very painful as I continue to journey through life’s narrative of healing, but the growth and joy are worth the struggle. This would not have been possible in my life without good therapy and coaching, for which I am incredibly grateful. I desire that practice to help restore lives and relationships, bring freedom, and provide hope.

Besides coaching, I am an Interior Designer and love creating spaces of comfort and beauty, I love the beach, hiking, and spending time with my family. These are times I cherish as our children have entered adulthood.
